Convert barn floor area and sq ft per bird into flock capacity — or size the floor you need for a target bird count.
Use this when planning a broiler house, chicken tractor, or small flock pen before placing chicks.
Small-farm guides often cite about 1.5–2.0 sq ft/bird indoors for meat birds; commercial densities can be tighter. Pasture access is separate outdoor space.
Capacity = floor sq ft ÷ sq ft per bird. Area needed = birds × sq ft per bird. Optional L×W fills floor area.
birds = floor_ft² ÷ ft²_per_bird
floor_ft² = birds × ft²_per_bird
600 sq ft at 1.5 sq ft/bird → 400 birds. For 400 birds at 2.0 sq ft/bird you need 800 sq ft.
Assumptions: usable floor is clear of equipment; density target fits bird age/genetics.
Limits: does not size ventilation, feeders, drinkers, or litter depth.
Responsibility: follow animal-care and processor program density rules when they apply.
Start denser in the brooder and expand space as birds grow, or plan final density from day one.
Add outdoor sq ft separately (often 5–10+ sq ft/bird for day ranging). This tool is indoor/tractor floor.
Laying hens usually need more indoor space per bird than broilers — use a higher sq ft/bird.
