Convert a target plant population into seeds/acre and lb/acre using germination, expected emergence, and seeds per pound — plus field totals.
Use this for corn, soybeans, small grains, or cover crops when the bag lists seeds/lb (or pure live seed data) and you have a stand goal in plants/acre.
Emergence % is your field expectation (not the same as lab germ). Pure live seed (PLS) workflows may combine germ × purity — enter the effective live fraction you intend.
Seeds to drop per acre equal the target stand divided by the product of germ and emergence fractions. Pounds per acre divide that by seeds per pound.
seeds_ac = target_pop ÷ (germ% ÷ 100 × emerge% ÷ 100)
lb_ac = seeds_ac ÷ seeds_per_lb
field_lb = lb_ac × acres; bags = field_lb ÷ bag_lb
Target 140,000 plants/ac, germ 95%, emerge 90%, 2,800 seeds/lb, 40 acres, 50 lb bags:
seeds/ac = 140000 ÷ (0.95×0.90) ≈ 163,743; lb/ac ≈ 58.5; field ≈ 2,339 lb ≈ 46.8 bags.
Assumptions: uniform singulation; germ and emerge multiply as independent fractions; seeds/lb from the bag lot.
Limits: does not set row spacing or planter plate charts. Coated seed may change seeds/lb vs bare seed.
Responsibility: follow seed tag and planter calibration; local Extension population guides override generic targets.
Lab germination is under ideal conditions. Emergence % is what you expect in the field (crusting, insects, depth). Using both avoids under-seeding.
You can set germ% to the PLS percentage and emergence to 100%, or split purity into germ and keep a separate emerge factor — be consistent.
Convert M seeds/acre goals to plants/acre (×1,000) before entering target population.
