Weaning weight 205-day

Compute a BIF-style adjusted 205-day weight from birth weight, weaning weight, calf age in days, and an optional dam-age adjustment.

When to use

Use this to standardize calf weaning weights to a 205-day basis for within-herd comparison when calves are weaned at different ages.

Dam-age adjustment presets follow common BIF cow-age additive adjustments (lb). Confirm the table your breed association or Extension uses before ranking cattle for sale.

How this is calculated

Average daily gain from birth to wean is scaled to 205 days, birth weight is added back, then the dam-age additive adjustment is applied.

adj_205 = ((wean − birth) ÷ age_days) × 205 + birth + dam_age_adj

Preset dam adjustments are illustrative common BIF-style additives — verify against your breed or Extension table.

Worked example

Birth 80 lb, wean 550 lb at 210 days, dam adj 0:

ADG period = (550−80)/210 ≈ 2.238 lb/day → 2.238×205 + 80 ≈ 539 lb adjusted 205-day weight.

Limits / assumptions

Assumptions: linear gain birth-to-wean; single dam-age additive; no age-of-dam × sex interactions beyond your entered adj.

Limits: not a full BIF contemporary-group analysis; creep feed, sickness, and implant status are not modeled.

Responsibility: use association software for official EPDs and sale catalog adjustments.

FAQ

Why adjust to 205 days?

It puts calves weaned at different ages on a common footing for within-herd comparison.

Are the dam presets official for every breed?

No. They are common textbook-style additives. Enter your association’s exact table in the custom lb field.

What if birth weight is unknown?

Many producers use a herd average birth weight. Accuracy drops if the substitute is far from the calf’s true birth weight.

Sex adjustment?

Some programs also adjust for sex of calf. This page focuses on age and dam-age; apply sex factors separately if required.
