Turn a soil-test or yield-goal nutrient target (N, P2O5, or K2O lb/acre) and the bag analysis into product rate and total bags for the field.
Use this when a soil test or agronomist recommendation gives nutrient lb/acre and you need how much of a specific fertilizer product to spread per acre — and how many bags or tons for the whole field.
Works for single-nutrient math on one analysis number (e.g. urea 46-0-0 as 46% N, or MAP using the P2O5 percentage). Blend products need a separate pass per nutrient of interest.
Product rate equals the nutrient target divided by the decimal fraction of that nutrient in the product.
product_lb_ac = target_lb_ac ÷ (analysis% ÷ 100)
field_lb = product_lb_ac × acres
bags = field_lb ÷ bag_weight (when bag weight > 0)
Example: 150 lb N/ac with 46% N urea → 150 ÷ 0.46 ≈ 326 lb product/ac.
Target 150 lb N/acre, urea at 46% N, 40 acres, 50 lb bags:
Product = 150 ÷ 0.46 ≈ 326.1 lb/acre → field total ≈ 13,043 lb ≈ 261 bags (round up for handling loss).
Assumptions: one nutrient at a time; analysis % is the guaranteed nutrient fraction on the label; no volatilization or incorporation loss built in.
Limits: does not balance multi-nutrient blends, starter bands, or split applications. Soil tests and local Extension rates override generic targets.
Responsibility: verify label rates, setbacks, and applicator calibration before spreading.
Use the percentage for the nutrient you are targeting. For 46-0-0 urea targeting N, enter 46. For 11-52-0 MAP targeting P2O5, enter 52.
Run the calculator twice (once per nutrient) and take the higher product rate required, or ask your supplier for a custom blend matched to both targets.
This page shows pure formula rate. Many applicators add 2–5% for turns and incomplete coverage — add that after you trust the base math.
Divide field lb by 2,000 for short tons of product.
