Tractor fuel cost per acre

Estimate fuel cost per acre and total field cost from gallons per acre — or from gal/hour and acres/hour — times diesel price.

When to use

Use this when bidding custom work, comparing tillage passes, or budgeting diesel for a field operation.

If you track gal/hour and know field capacity (acres/hour), the calculator derives gal/acre. Typical ranges: spraying often <0.5 gal/acre; heavy tillage can exceed 2 gal/acre.

How this is calculated

Cost/acre = gal/acre × $/gal. From rates: gal/acre = (gal/hour) ÷ (acres/hour). Field total = cost/acre × acres.

gal/acre = gph ÷ aph  (rate mode)
$/acre = gal_per_acre × price
field_$ = $/acre × acres

Worked example

1.2 gal/acre at $3.75/gal → $4.50/acre. On 80 acres → $360 fuel. Or 6 gal/h ÷ 5 ac/h = 1.2 gal/acre (same).

Limits / assumptions

Assumptions: steady fuel burn and field speed; price is pump or bulk cost you enter.

Limits: excludes labor, repairs, depreciation, and lubricant. Headland turns cut effective acres/hour.

Responsibility: verify with your fuel records for bids and taxes.

FAQ

Where do gal/acre numbers come from?

On-farm fuel meters, manufacturer guides, or Extension machinery cost sheets for similar operations.

Multiple passes?

Run once per pass and add, or enter combined gal/acre for the whole system.

Gasoline engines?

Same math — enter that fuel’s price and consumption.
